Transgenders' Work Experience

Hey Guys,

Please read the following article for the next class http://www.jstor.org/stable/353763?seq=5#page_scan_tab_contents

The article covers Gender in the work field and what I am going to talk about has to do with Transgenders' work experience. Now this is a topic that does not have much information in the article or the textbook but it is talked about on page 193 in chapter 9. As you read the article please think about

How does this article apply to people transitioning from one gender to another?

Do you think that transgender employees go through the same troubles that other genders experience in the work field?

Why do you feel that there is not much information on transgender work experience?

  1. Hi Daymer,
Okay so first I really thought that your presentation was eye-opening. I had never even thought about the transgender lens when considering work. It made me think of where I work on campus; we interact with a lot of transgender students who you otherwise wouldn't know were transitioning if they didn't tell you. I think it is very hard for people to gather information on transgender work experience (your last question) because the identity of transgender doesn't end at the fact that they have or are transitioning but how they identify in that very instance.

In response to your 2nd question: I think it depends on the experience. I think someone who is hired as a female and then transitions while employed may have a harder time with other employees. However, when you consider someone who transitioned prior to applying/ being selected for a job and now only identifies as transitioned (not transitioning) maybe they would have an easier time at work (not saying there won't be obstacles).
